Special Projects
The Valley Cultural Center’s Outreach Committee has adopted the School Beautification project as an annual program. The 'Cornucopia of Cultural Diversity…past and present' will be the theme of our first mural site at Reseda Elementary School. Designed by a professional artist/teacher for the VCC program, fifth grade teachers will lead students in classroom lessons and research assignments, linked to heritage, language, social studies; the history of murals, mosaics and artifacts; and the importance and benefits of cultural diversity in today’s society. Students will select one artifact from their own culture and one from a culture represented in their community. The 'painting team', led by a professional artist/muralist, will include students, teachers, parents, and members of the VCC Outreach Committee, adding to the richness and meaning of this project.
People from all cultures express themselves through their art. This mural project will encourage students to learn the cross-cultural understanding and respect that is vital in today's neighborhoods. They will learn about the differences and similarities in their own and others cultural roots and what all people bring to the community, whether past or present. Students will learn team work, gain pride in the legacy they will leave in their community, and throughout the process, achieve enhanced relationships with peers, teachers, parents, and community leaders who will join our team of volunteers. Participants will leave a unique mural that adds beauty and culture to the area for all to enjoy into the future. A new school will be selected each year for this program.
Thank you to the City of Los Angeles, Board of Public Works, Office of Community Beautification for their generous grant this year.
